Get Outside- it's essential, not just a nicety.
I’ve written before about why we should get outside in nature more.
Unfortunately more and more evidence is coming to light about the increasing sickness due to the lack of outdoor time. There is now the term “nature deficit disorder” which suggests children who spend too much time indoors on screens may develop attention deficits, hyperactivity, or depression.
You can look at all the studies and science you like but when you use common sense you know you feel better when you’ve been out in nature- calmer, happier, more focused, you sleep better and there’s a sense of belonging.
Now, that’s extremely powerful! I’ll put those benefits into different words-.
Rested and rejuvenated,
Wow!! All that from a daily walk on the beach, through the fields or woods. And it’s free!
Haven’t got the time? See how much money you’ll have to spend trying to get those benefits through supplementing, classes, medicating, consulting with doctors and health professionals still while achieving inferior results and sometimes creating more issues.
That’s another reason why I created my ME & U Programme to get kids moving outdoors in nature. It’s vital to all childrens development especially in these rapidly changing times. Also academically, moving in nature been proven to enhance executive control, working memory and cognitive flexibility.
As a kid I spent heaps of time outdoors, kicking a ball, climbing a tree, wandering aimlessly. No structure but I didn’t always need structure (check out my blog on rest and play). I was just thinking, processing and sometimes just switching off. A very healthy way to spend time for all of us, not just kids. Last century doctors were still writing prescriptions for “time in nature” to heal patients.
So pick something you enjoy and go outside. Doctors orders!
