Are you Life fit or sports specific fit???

When you think of fitness what springs to mind? Running 10 k’s, bootcamps, spin classes or all of the above?

Fitness can mean so many things to different people but I like to put into everyday life so answer me these 10 questions and let me know how many out of 10 you can say yes to-

  1. Can you get down to the floor and back up again without using your hands?

  2. Can you sit on the floor/grass for an hour with ease?

  3. Can you climb a good sized tree/ climb over a shoulder height fence?

  4. Can you tie your shoes (whilst they’re on your feet) without sitting down for example single leg balance and bringing your other knee to your chest?

  5. Can you breathe using your diaphragm for example when you inhale your belly should expand outwards rather than your shoulders lifting upwards and your belly drawing inwards?

  6. Can you go about daily life pain/injury free 95% of the time?

  7. Can you carry 10 percent of your bodyweight’s worth of shopping (in bags using your hands and not a backpack) and walk 1 k without stopping?

  8. Can you cope well with hot and cold weather?

  9. Can you cope well with daily life challenges like traffic, nagging kids, inconsiderate people?

  10. Can you sprint across a road to avoid a speeding car with ease if necessary?

Now you may argue what’s weather or stress got to do with being “fit”? Well, if you were wanting to join the army for example and you nailed the cross country march and assault course but the moment it got cold you wanted to duck inside and put the heating on I’m not sure that’ll be an option. And if you feel overwhelmed with the everyday life challenges then when things really “heat up” you may not make the best decisions for all involved which in some scenarios could mean life or death. So mentally fit needs to go hand in hand with physically fit.

Use the results from these questions as a marker of where you’re at now rather than a pass or fail and then work on those areas that you feel are the most important for you.

As always, if you have any questions or need help with getting fitter for life then just get in touch.

Thanks for reading!
